A customer calls me and says “My network is down again. There is something wrong with it. It keeps going down and every time it does I lose millions of dollars in revenue. Please help me."
I say “You called me last month and had the same issue. Did you try making the network configuration changes I suggested? Or did you try making ANY changes on your network at all?" “No. I haven’t had time. And besides, the Board of Directors is in deadlock about what to do." “Then what am I supposed to do?" “I really need you to help me keep my network up and running." “You have to try making some kind of configuration change. What's really keeping you from making some changes?" “Besides the Board of Directors being unable to make a decision, I’m afraid to. What if the changes make my network perform even worse?" “I’m sorry, but I really don’t think you have a choice. In the very least you have to try something different than doing nothing. It’s obvious you can’t have your network go down intermittently. And I have given you some suggestions to try. If you don’t want to try those, then that’s okay by me. But if you’re unwilling to even try some suggestions from others you trust even more than me, then I don't know what to say. What can I tell you? Because unless you try something different, broken networks never fix themselves. You're a smart person who has built an amazing business with this network, so I know what I'm saying makes sense to you. If you keep your network the same, then it will probably keep going down every month - or maybe even more often because you haven’t tried to fix it. You have to make a choice. Either tolerate the loss of millions of dollars every time the network goes down, or try making a change. It’s your choice."
